Magnet is every animal's friend. Time to make him yours...

Like George W. Bush, pitbulls and semolina, pigeons are desperate for a good press officer. They are, after all, in the eyes of their detractors, winged rats who transport lurgy and blockade Trafalgar Square. Unless, that is, you’re Even Johansen, aka Magnet, who lives on what used to be a pigeon farm in Scotland and as a pigeon fancier believes that they’re misunderstood.

“I’ve got about 60 or 70,” he says, “and you can train them. You go (he whistles) and they know they have to come down. I’ve got a friend in Norway, and we send letters and stuff to each other. And if you want to smuggle a bit of hash, pigeons are the ultimate way to do it.”

All of which, like Johansen’s insistence that he came up with his present epithet “after being cured of anaemia with a tattoo from a magnet while in America”, may or not be true. What isn’t in dispute is the quality of Magnet’s new EP, the lofty, quietly powerful ‘The Day We Left Town’. Informed by bucolic rock and electronica, it is, in the shape of the outstanding title track, Thom Yorke fronting Bjork’s former group The Sugarcubes, all filmic strings, twitchy beats and melancholia. “I can be easily persuaded that people with broken hearts and bad livers are good,” says Johansen. “I’m fascinated by the fact that there is so much beauty and decay.”

Although this is only Magnet’s third EP - following last year’ s ‘Where Happiness Lives’ and ‘Chasing Dreams’ - the Bergen-raised Johansen is no stranger to the biz. Aged 13 he toured the States with his father’s group Kontiki, “who sounded like one of those bands you find when you take the ferry to France”. Unimpressed, he grew his hair and, albeit briefly, immersed himself in poodle rock: “I was smitten with their teeth.” Now he admires penguins (“They’re curious little things and so am I”); John Lennon’s alleged pronouncement that the self is all (“I never let myself down. If I make an appointment I am always there”); and a breed of cow particular to his new home in Dumfries.

“D’you know the Galloway Belties?” he asks. “They’re like cows in uniform. They’ve all got a big white stripe around their bellies. They’re the only organised cows in the world. So I thought, ‘If these cows can organise themselves, I should move to where they live’.”

Libido redefines meaning of word
By Adlin Rosli Daily Arts Writer

The Europeans are known for their libido. And if three Norwegian men have anything to add, that stereotype will be redefined.

The three men - Cato, Even and Jorgen - are the musicians that make up one of the most engaging guitar pop bands out of Europe today.

They are the men of Libido - Cato on bass, Jorgen on drums and Even on vocals and guitars.

The band's name does not personify the music of the group. Libido's latest album, "Killing some dead time" (Velvel Records) is not an expression of wantonness. It is actually an enjoyable collection of pop gems conveying modern-day relationship-related dysfunctions, which leads the listener to wonder about the origin of the band's name.

"It was taken from a detective show in Norway, " Cato said in a recent interview with The Daily. Originally hailing from Norway, the band has since relocated to England.

"It is much easier to do what we do in the UK," Cato said. The band's relocation to England actually affected the recording of "Killing some dead time."

"Half the album was recorded in Norway and the half was recorded in the UK," Cato said. Each member was initially in a different band, but the three eventually got together to form Libido in 1995.

Singer and guitar player Even was key to the band's formation, as he brought them started the recording. "Even was working at the recording studio where we recorded our album," Cato said. "We snuck in and recorded between other bands recording in that studio, so we wouldn't have to pay for the studio time. "We even sometimes used other bands' equipment. We basically got out of there before the next band would come in to record and recorded for free."

The group's music itself is very rich in vocal hooks and pop melodies. Song structures are also diverse, as they vary from the simple in-your-face attack of "Blow" to the breezy, jammed-out "Revolving." Although Even writes all the lyrics and initially comes up with songs, Cato and drummer Jorgen are still responsible for making the songs become band efforts. "Creatively, we inspire each other, and that gives our songs their character," Cato said. "Even may bring in a song in its original form, but after we are done with it, it ends up very different from how it was."

The band's musical influences are very diverse as well, ranging from Sonic Youth to the Beatles. Cato sites Kiss as his big influence, which is evident in his bass playing on the album. "It's the Gene Simmons bass playing style," Cato said. "I love Kiss. I saw them twice last time they toured. I saw them in the UK and in Oslo, Norway."

And we all know about Kiss's legendary libido, don't we? Quite a buzz has begun to develop about Libido, and the band will soon be playing shows in Australia and Japan. "One of the great things about being in a band, aside from meeting people, good and bad, is that you get to travel," Cato said.

So if Cato, Even and Jorgen have their way, the redefinition of the word libido will have a new twist in Europe - a more melodic twist perhaps, but still very much arousing.

Even Johansen was working as an engineer in Bergen and he couldn't afford to pay for studio time. After a month working in the studio he called up a couple of his friends and they worked on some songs that he had written when no one was in the studio - about 3 in the morning. He had been going into the studio and then decided that he had better do something musically again.

When asked if he was afraid that he would get fired since he was on a new job, he said "No, the only thing is that we would have been presented with a bill a bit too soon." After working together for about a week with his friends they decided to make a go of it and form a band. Half of the album was recorded during these secret night sessions.

"We all had been in different bands. But the Norwegian pop scene really is quite tiny. So we had to go away to really break out." It was hard to break out, he said, but it was a necessity. "London is closer than the States."

Libido has a pop sound but they aren't really like other British bands because they are Norwegian. Are they in competition with other bands? "No, not in competition. We just do what we do - we record. In Norway, we are something of a novelty. Because we are the first band that has gotten out of Norway and have made it."

Of course there was the question of the band's name: "When we were about 10 there was the detective hour on Friday nights. It was the only time you would get to stay up until 11. Shows like Batman, Streets of San Francisco and other programs were on. There is one show from Germany in which the policeman named Derek was talking about 'deadly libido.' That was an easy one for us to pick that name. Derek is the policeman who has had the most influence on Norwegian children."

If you have had a chance to hear their cover of "Annie's Song" on their ep then it's a treat and a rarity. How often do you get to hear a pop band do a cover of a John Denver song? "After we got signed and we'd paid the bills our engineer said why don't you do 'Annie's Song?'" The name didn't ring a bell, but after the engineer coaxed them into it by singing a couple of bars and saying "come on, he could be dead in a year." They did. Actually he was ahead of his time. He [Denver] as actually a good songwriter but never really noticed. In fact you would say he was the first nerd.

"My mom was really into Elvis, and my dad, who was in a crappy band called "Kontiki", liked the Beatles," says 26-year-old front man Even. "When I was six years old, my friends and I made our own band and used oil barrels for drums and a guitar with four strings."
